The immune system is now a key tool in developing personalized targeted therapies against many types of cancer. With an extensive background in immunology in the context of human disease, Philip Liu, Ph.D., joins BioChat to discuss a promising new drug against bladder cancer, and his unique career path towards this latest achievement.
Phil and Kin talk about our shared love of science, albeit with different career paths and methodologies to promote scientific breakthroughs, and advice for aspiring biomedical researchers. We also discuss the challenges in obtaining research funding and how the funding mechanism needs to adapt to continue attracting bright minds to academia to train the next generation of great scientists. Phil also asks what it is Kin actually does here!
Of course, we also talk about the exciting new IL-15-based therapy developed by Phil's company, ImmunityBio, as they have very promising results and are working towards clinical trials.

Tuesday Jun 27, 2023
The continued interest in many things science and science fiction is evident in many of the stories and movies that we enjoy, but for the vast majority of us, the laboratory is not a career path or lifestyle that is practical. Joining BioChat is Emma Bartle, a business development representative for ABclonal's custom reagent services, as we discuss alternative careers that can still help accelerate research science.
Emma and Kin talk about the joys of being involved in laboratory research, the benefits of great mentorship and the relationships that were formed, as well as our thought process behind staying in science without a pipette in our hands. Emma also discusses how her role allows her to work with innovators from many bioscience fields in both academic and industrial research as they work together to develop critical reagents to facilitate potential breakthroughs.
